Training Tomy

Training is a process, that you need to learn too.

This week we want to keep talking about ourselves and some of Tomy’s training process.
When he first came home, he knew a couple of things. He knew how to sit, lay down, wait for his food, and to our advantage he was already potty trained.

I remember meeting other owners and their dog and thinking “I wish he would listen to me like (_enter dog’s name_) listens to them, or “I wish he could walk nicely on the lead like (_enter dog’s name_) does.
At the time I didn’t know better, I didn’t understand what I do now, I wished and compared which basically led us nowhere.

Training a dog takes time, patience, and consistency, but most importantly it takes A LOT of learning. You need to learn how to teach, guide and communicate with your dog. For this, you need a good trainer that will educate you.

What we found to be helpful is to keep an open mind and listen to what they are telling you! After all their job is to HELP YOU and your dog, and they need your collaboration. Don’t get me wrong.. if something is off and they are not explaining the reason why they are doing something, and they are not answering your questions; look for different trainers that will give you the right approach.

With Tomy as we mentioned in our last post, we had mainly some reactivity issues, but it was so much more than that. He pulled on a lead, he did NOT listen to us at all when we were outside, and inside only if we had a treat. He did what he wanted. Now he is more attentive, he knows what we ask of him, he has clarity and has become an amazing dog. He still has things to work on, but we are very happy about how everything turned out.

Just remember, your dog is not bad because it wants to be, it doesn’t know better yet.

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for taking the time to read this post.

Give love to your dog, respect him, take care of him and he will be happy. That is the cool thing about dogs, they don’t demand as long as they receive love and respect.

Keep tuned on our next posts. We will provide the necessary knowledge on how to give our dogs the most pleasant life.
